Zivo Magnum Pinot Noir 2005

Tasting Notes:

The ‘Black Poplar Block’ is a four hectare planting. It takes it’s name from the two majestic 100 year old Black Poplar trees that dominate this area of the vineyard. The first three hectares are planted approximately three by two metre spacings with the fourth hectare more densely planted. The oldest vines are now 11 years. The first two hectares are planted in Clone 10/5 and 5 – the balance is planted in a number of Dijon clones - 113, 777, 115 and 667.
The 2005 vintage was challenging with a frosty cool spring impacting on flower set. A long warm autumn ensured the fruit came into the winery in excellent condition. Although volumes are down 2005 has the potential to be an excellent vintage as it produced small tight bunches - concentrating flavours. As is our practice, the grapes were hand harvested clone by clone on 15-16th April 2005. The wine has matured in French oak barriques (one third new) for one year. Bottling took place in March 2006.
