Black Poplar Pinot Noir 2004

Tasting Notes:

The ‘Black Poplar Block’ is a four hectare planting. It takes it’s name from the two majestic 100 year old Black Poplar trees that dominate this area of the vineyard. The first three hectares are planted approximately three by two metre spacings with the fourth hectare more densely planted. The oldest vines are now 11 years. The first two hectares are planted in Clone 10/5 and 5 - the balance is planted in a number of Dijon clones - 113, 777, 115 and 667.
The 2004 vintage was noted for persistent frosts in the autumn prior to harvest which impacted slightly on yields. Despite the cool autumn weather the fruit came into the winery in excellent condition resulting in a spicy, elegant, complex wine. As is our practice, the grapes were hand harvested clone by clone on 19th April 2005. The wine has matured in French oak barriques (one third new) for one year. Bottling took place in March 2005 - wine released October 2005.
